Here at the Girl Power office, we’re crazy for cute, cuddly animals! We’re super duper lucky at GP HQ ‘coz we all have pet dogs- Mel has a German Shepherd/Husky called Toby, Amy has a Silky Terrier/Maltese Terrier called Sally, Nat has a Maltese/Mini Fox Terrier called Mookie and I have a German Short Haired Pointer called Max. Aaaw!

Tell us- what kind of pet do you have and what’s the cutest thing he/she has ever done?

Back to School!

January 25th, 2010 by Nat | 6 Comments | Filed in School

Hey Powerettes!

Excited about going back to school this month? Whether you’re moving to a new school, or simply moving up a year, starting a new school year can be exciting, fun and scary- all at the same time. Getting used to new teachers, friends, even new shoes can all take time! Its important to know that as scared and nervous as you feel, everyone else probably feels the same way!

Even some of your fave celebs didn’t always have the easiest time at school. Take for instance singing sensation Demi Lovato, who struggled to fit in.

“There were girls I dealt with at my school who I thought were my best friends, who just turned on me and that made it really hard,” says Demi. But Demi didn’t let bullies get in the way of her dream. Music and guitar became her therapy: “I just had a lot of fun and focused on music and acting more!”

Even super spunk Zac Efron wasn’t Mr Popular in high school. “I was never the cool kid in high school,” says Zac. “I was the nerd. I spent way too much time worrying about what girls thought of me.” Zac dealt with bullies by recognising their jealousy. “When people want to bring you down it’s because you have something that they admire,” Zac says.

Ashley Tisdale may have played school drama queen Sharpay, but she confesses to being the complete opposite in high school. “I came out to LA in eighth grade so the girls in my high school had all grown up together,” says Ash. “It was really hard. I didn’t really know anybody. I was just the new girl who was quiet.” Ash dealt with her insecurity by mingling with everybody and concentrating on her career and schoolwork.

Don’t forget that school can be tonnes of fun and important! Each of these celebs went on to have awesome careers, which they couldn’t have done without great drama and music teachers and lessons.

So Powerettes, we’d like to know, what’s your advice when to beating the school blues?

We Love Oz!

This weekend is Australia Day so we took a moment to honour some of our fave Aussie Celebs!

Jessica Mauboy

Big-voiced Jess missed out on becoming the Australian Idol but she never gave up hope! Jess may have been shy growing up, but she never stopped singing. “I’d always be getting into trouble in class for singing and humming,” she says. “I wouldn’t even realise and be sent out of the room!” Jess’s dream of one day singing to huge audiences like her musical idols Mariah Carey and Beyoncé has became a reality these last few years! So far Jess has rapped with Flo Rider, stormed the pop charts, won two music awards and even starred in her very first movie ‘Bran Nue Dae!’ We’re so proud Jess!

Cassie Davis

It’s hard to believe this spunky songstress burst onto the music scene just a year ago! Since then she’s released a debut album with ultra catchy hits ‘Like it Loud’ and ‘Differently’. Cassie has also made a big impression on bands like The Black Eyes Peas and Gym Class Heroes. She writes and produces her own songs, and has penned lyrics for artists like Ricki-Lee Coulter. Part of Cassie’s awesomeness is her individuality. “I don’t do things just because other people think that’s the way it should be done. That wouldn’t be true to who I am,” she says

Bindi Irwin

Bindi’s love of animals and nature is only matched by her love of acting and performing. In between starring in multiple TV shows, releasing her own clothes range and saving the environment, it seems there’s nothing this dynamo can’t do! Bindi has always been our fave eco-warrior, teaching us simple ways to look after wildlife and our environment. It’s no wonder Bindi scored the Biggest Greenie award at this year’s Nickelodeon Teen Choice Awards. Bindi accepted her award saying, “I’d really like to dedicate this to my dad and the Steve Irwin wildlife reserve we are trying to protect.” Awww!

How about you Powerettes? Which Aussie Celebs have inspired you this past year? We’d love to hear from you!

Holiday Fun

January 12th, 2010 by Bec | No Comments | Filed in Celebrity

Hey there Powerettes!

Wanna know what your fave celebs have been up to these holidays?

Zac Efron’s been hitting the slopes! Sporty Zac spent a few weeks in December snowboarding with friends in Aspen, Colorado. We just hope he’s being careful!

Meanwhile, Vanessa Hudgens been spending quality time with her BFFs! Ness spent plenty of girly time with her little sis and her bestie Ash Tisdale. The girls kicked back at their fave coffee shops and celebrated Ness’s 21st with a surprise party organised by Ness’s awesome BF Zac!

On the other hand the JoBros spent Christmas doing what they do best- performing! The boys rocked out at the 2009 Disney Parks Christmas Parade. But not before some quality family time, where Nick Tweeted: “Eating some Christmas Eve dinner with family and friends. I love how Christmas draws people together.” Aaaw!

Cute couple Miley Cyrus and Aussie Liam Hemsworth rang in the New Year together in Melbourne with Liam’s fam! They then holidayed together in Phillip Island, relaxing before they got busy promoting their new flick ‘The Last Song’. We’re getting very excited about this tearjerker, especially after watching this behind the scenes video from the movie.’ Check it out and tell us what you think!

Lastly our fave Werewolf  Taylor Lautner has been flexing his acting skills performing hilarious skits on Saturday Night Live! We think Taylor’s performance was hilarious and brave. So we’d like to know Powerettes, have you done anything new and exciting these holidays?

Find Your Inner Ugly Betty!

January 11th, 2010 by Bec | 3 Comments | Filed in Beauty, Wisdom

Hey Girl Powerettes,

One of the best things about holidays is all that spare time! You know, the freedom to do whatever you like, whenever you like. So I’m happy to say that the last few weeks have been spent doing exactly that- reading, swimming and watching one of my favourite TV series on DVD; Ugly Betty!

In case you haven’t watched it, (which you really should do, straight away), Ugly Betty is all about smart and kind-hearted Betty Suarez, who lands a job at fashion magazine, Mode. Only problem is that Betty has some seriously bad dress sense, and her nasty co-workers are determined to bring Betty down. However, through hard work and determination Betty manages to keep her job and even get a promotion! How does she do it though?

Here are my top 3 lessons to learn from the wonderful Betty SuarezZ!

1. Put On Your Poker Face

Betty’s finds herself in sticky situations all the time! When she’s given her first writing assignment for Mode, Betty panics and nearly cracks. But instead of letting her fear show, Betty smiles and looks confident. Betty’s throws herself into her assignment and ends up doing a fantastic job. So remember, when even when you’re not feeling 100% confident, fake it til you make it!

2. Just Do It!

It could be talking to your crush, or the teacher asking you a question in class you don’t know but all of a sudden your tummy’s full of butterflies and your hands are clammy and cold. You’re nervous and can’t seem to focus! Just remember that even when Betty’s scared and nervous (like on her first horrible day at Mode) she asks heaps of questions and takes on challenging tasks. Just remember, confidence is key!

3. The Beauty in Ugly

Betty lives in a world obsessed with looks. Both at Mode and for Betty’s sister Hilda and nephew Justin, beauty and fashion is everything. But Betty’s not interested; she’d rather be a good person and get ahead in her career than worry about looking perfect. Eventually, Betty’s sense of humour and personality wins over her co-workers and the fashion world as a whole. So remember, beauty really is on the inside!

What about you, do you have any TV role models? What great lessons have you learnt from your fave TV shows?

xx Nat
