Movie Madness

February 26th, 2010 by Amy | 8 Comments | Filed in Movies

Psst! Today Mel and I got to sneak out of the office and catch a movie… new flick Alice In Wonderland! You can catch Alice at the movies from March 4 (that’s next Thursday). Want to know what we thought of the movie? Well…

Amy says: “It was a teeny bit scary, especially when Alice was falling down the hole! I loved the scenery and the costumes, and because it was in 3D everything looked so lush and real. I loved Anne Hathaway as the White Queen too!”

Mel says: “OMG! Mia Wasikowska (she played Alice) did really well. And Tim Burton’s vision was amazing!”

Hey there,

We hope you had a fantabulous weekend!

We got lots of emails over the weekend from Girl Power readers recommending their fave websites, so we decided to share some of them with you! Check them out next time you’re surfing the web, and don’t forget to post a comment below telling us what you think…

Wonderful Website #1

www.playbubblestruggle.com

“This is a fantastic arcade style game where you have to burst all the bubbles without them hitting you or before the time runs out! It’s sooo addictive: once you start playing, you’ll play it again and again and again.” Emma

Wonderful Website #2

www.gogirlhq.com

“Some of you might love the Go Girl! books like me, or just want to check the web page out! Well if you want to check this site out (I recommend you do) go onto: www.gogirlhq.com, it is one of my fave sites.” Emily

Wonderful Website #3

www.poptropica.com

“I know a really cool website called Poptropica it’s really awesome. You get to make a little character with a wacky name then go walk around all the islands and complete the task on each island to earn money to buy cool costumes for your character to wear. It is really fun and challenging.” Georgia

What about you, do you have a fave website?

Omg – Zac’s back in Oz!

February 17th, 2010 by Nat | 4 Comments | Filed in Celebrity

On Tuesday, the GP team woke up to some very exciting news… the lovely Zac Efron has arrived in our hometown, Sydney! Brave Zac took on some monster waves with Layne Beachley at Bondi Beach! Poor Zac was so swamped with fans that police had to quickly construct a fence so that he could have his surf lesson!

Zac and Ness are here for an Oakley ‘Learn To Surf’ event, and they’ve been spotted all around town. The romantic duo were caught chilling over lunch in Circular Quay, popping into McDonalds for a quick snack, and even doing a bit of sunglasses shopping!

The fab pair arrived early Monday morning, no doubt looking forward to a bit of summer sun, and were a little shocked to arrive in a rain-drenched Sydney. Here’s hoping the weather will pick up for our favourite twosome!

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for any Zanessa sightings and goss – and be sure to let us know if you spot the pair!

Lucky Ducks

February 9th, 2010 by Amy | 1 Comment | Filed in Stuff

I’ve been thinking about good luck and bad luck lately.

If a bird pooped on your knee in the school playground, would that mean you have good luck or bad luck? OK so you’ve got poop on your knee and that’s unlucky… but poop on the knee is better than poop in your hair or on your sandwich! EW!

Some things – like black cats and broken mirrors – are supposed to give you bad luck. And some things – like four leaf clovers and horse shoes – are supposed to give you good luck. But are they just silly superstitions?

Here’s my luck story…

When I was doing my scary Year 12 exams, my mum and dad gave me a starfish necklace. I’ve worn it to every test or scary meeting since! I became obsessed with my ‘lucky’ necklace and I thought that if I accidentally left it at home, I would fail. But then I started thinking, what if I wore my necklace and I still failed? Was my ‘lucky’ necklace suddenly unlucky?

Do you believe in lucky charms? Email girlpower@next.com.au and tell us about your lucky charm! Send us a picture too and you could appear in the mag.

Hope you’re having a ‘lucky’ week!!!!

Snack Attack

February 3rd, 2010 by Amy | 4 Comments | Filed in food

When the clock hits 3pm-ish in the Girl Power office, our tummies start grumbling. We bet it’s the same for you! You probably need an after-school snack STAT to stop your stomach making more noise than an angry lawn mower.

But what’s a girl to munch on when she’s feeling ravenous? Comment or email us (girlpower@next.com.au) with your best snack recipes and tips!

Here are some of our favourites:

Mmm Milkshakes

Milk is a great hunger-buster because it fills you up fast and it’s packed with good stuff like calcium for healthy bones.

Try

  1. Two spoonfuls of Milo, one cup of milk and stir for a chocolatey treat.
  2. Whack a banana, a dollop of honey and one cup of milk in a blender.

Brilliant Biscuits

Top a cracker or rice cake with vegies, fruits and spreads for an easy-peasy snack to stop your tummy moaning and groaning.

Try

  1. Vegemite and sliced cheese.
  2. Cheese spread and sliced apple.

STILL HUNGRY?

Try

  1. Munching on a bowl of cereal – it’s not just for breakfast!
  2. Popping up some homemade popcorn (ask Mum or Dad for help)
  3. It’s a classic for a reason, so whip up some cheese on toast!
  4. Yoghurt topped with sliced banana or berries. DELICIOUS!
  5. Making your own ‘Scroggin’ with mixed nuts and dried fruits.

ARE YOU STILL HUNGRY???

You can’t be!!!

Did you know your body can sometimes trick you and make you feel hungry when you’re actually thirsty? Before you chow down on every edible item in sight, sit down and have a big drink of water.
