Leading Lady

June 29th, 2010 by Amy | 17 Comments | Filed in Stuff

Hey GP-ers!
Did you hear the good news? Julia Gillard is now the Prime Minister of Australia! WOWZERS! This is a really big deal because Julia is the first female Prime Minister in Australia’s history. Wahooooooo! See, girls really can do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING we set our minds to. GIRL POWER!

The GP team wish Julia good luck with her tough new job. We also want to ask for a few tiny favours…

Dear Julia,
Now that you’re in charge can you PLEASE:

1. Make Fridays a day off from work and school so that Aussies can have a 3-day weekend. Woot!

2. Give away free chocolate cake in schools and hospitals and train stations and everywhere – this will make people happy!

3. Oh and we’d also like you to organise peace in war-torn countries, help clean up the environment, save endangered animals, stop people  bullying and stealing, find a cure for cancer, help people who are sick or poor or homeless… the list goes on and on!

Thanks Julia!
Love, The GP Team.

Got any ideas for how Julia can make Australia an even more amazing place? Send us an email (girlpower@next.com.au) or write a comment below, and tell us what you would do if you were the Prime Minister!

Marvellous Marmaduke

June 24th, 2010 by Anthea | 11 Comments | Filed in Competition, Movies

Marmaduke is your typical 200 pound teenage Great Dane who stands out anywhere he goes. The family pet of the Winslow’s, Marmaduke has outgrown his cute puppy stage and has become an awkward, gangly, insecure gentle giant who tends to be inadvertently accident-prone due to his gargantuan size.

Always the outcast, he gets a new lease on life when the Winslow’s decide to make a move to the O.C. (Orange County), but when he falls for a hot Afghan Hound named Jezebel, Marmaduke has to take on the dog park to make a place for himself, all the while learning that it’s who you are inside that makes you the top dog.

Watch the trailer then answer the following question:

Is your pet as accident prone as Marmaduke? Tell us the funniest thing your pet has done in your family!

Email us at girlpower@next.com.au with your answers to go in the draw to win!

5 lucky winners will receive:

  • A Family Pass to Marmaduke
  • Marmaduke Frisbee
  • 12″ Marmaduke plush toy
  • Velcro Paw & Ball Set
  • Marmaduke Furry Stickers

10 Runners up will receive:

  • A double in-season pass!

Be a good samaritan!

June 23rd, 2010 by Nat | No Comments | Filed in Contribute, Stuff, The Magazine

Hey Girl Powerettes!

Yesterday I experienced a random act of kindness and  that’s why I feel  inspired to write an A-B-C of good deeds to spread the good karma!

Like heaps of GP readers, I’d do anything for my pet pooch Mooky. So when she leapt into a muddy lake, I was terrified!  That’s why a big shout out goes to the very brave man who dived in yesterday to rescue her.

Good samaritans like this superhero deserve to thanked! Good deeds, whether big or small make the world go round. From saving the planet to giving to charity, kind acts can come in any shape or form. Have a think about what you can do to make the world a better place.  Maybe you can pick one good deed for each letter of the alphabet. Keep reading GIRL POWER and you’ll find lot of awesome tips on our I Heart Helping page. In the meantime, I’ll get you started on good deeds from A-Z…

A – Arrange for you and all your friends to get rid of all your old clothes and donate them to your fave charity!  Twilight star Kellan Lutz was recently spotted donating over 50 pairs of jeans to the Haiti Relief fund – how generous!

B – Be a darling and offer to help Mum and Dad out with dinner or washing up afterwards! They’ll be so grateful!

C – Crack a joke and brighten up your friend with the long face!  Laughter is the best medicine after all! If all else fails, hire a funny DVD like She’s The Man – Amanda Bynes is hilarious!

World Cup Fever

June 18th, 2010 by Anthea | 15 Comments | Filed in Stuff

Hi Girl Powerettes!

Happy Friday! Yay! What a week it’s been, it seems World Cup fever has taken over the country! So Australia lost the last game, but it is awesome that everyone is getting excited about sport and fitness, isn’t it? Getting active, working as a team, having fun – sounds like a recipe for a perfect afternoon.

Our New Zealand readers must be pretty excited too. The NZ team scored a goal in the last few minutes of injury time to come home with a tie. It was also the team’s first World Cup goal ever! Yippee!

As a side note – how cute is the World Cup mascot? His name is Zakumi and he is a leopard. His motto is, “Zakumi’s game is Fair Play!” Sounds like a fab motto to me!

For more fun FIFA facts, grab this month’s issue of GP! You’ll be a super soccer expert in no time!

xx

p.s. Are you trying out a new sport or getting World Cup fever? Let us know! All you sporty sistas – comment below!

Hair Makeovers!

June 16th, 2010 by Nat | 3 Comments | Filed in Stuff

Hey Girl Powerettes!

We were all a bit devo to hear about Demi and Joe’s recent break-up! We’re pretty sure Demi was a bit teary herself, but then she posted the following tweet; “Fixed some highlights + added more :D I’ll add pics soon! I have blonde in my hair!!! Ahhhhh!!!!! I love love love my new hair!!! It’s so light :D .”

Now here at GP HQ, we may not be hair experts, but we know a thing or two about the power of hair makeovers! Demi may still be crushing on her ex, but her new highlights are a sign that she’s on the mend, and looking and feeling confident!

A major chop or even a fringe cut can totally transform your mood. GP reader Jade puts in her cool coloured hair extensions whenever she feels like a boost! “I love my coloured hair extensions,” she says. “There’s so easy to put in and I love how they make me feel!”

It’s been a while since the GP team had any radical hair transformations, and we can’t help but feel inspired by Demi’s new look! So tell us Girl Powerettes, if you could suggest one big hair change what would it be?  Email us at girlpower@next.com.au or drop us a comment below!

Getting to Know You… Part 3

June 11th, 2010 by Anthea | 12 Comments | Filed in The Magazine

It’s time to meet Anthea, GP’s fabulous Features Writer!

NAME: Anthea
BIRTHDAY: 17th of August
WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE? Sort of… My parents saw an ad for the clothing designer Anthea Crawford in a magazine and thought it sounded sweet!
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED? Last weekend! I got a message from one of my besties, Georgie, who lives in London. It was so nice to hear from her, so I was smiley and teary at the same time!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVE THING TO EAT FOR LUNCH? I’m loving curried lentil soup with dark rye bread! Oh and I top off every lunch with a Granny Smith apple – I’m the GP apple queen!
DO YOU STILL HAVE YOUR TONSILS? La la la (that’s me singing!). I sure do!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVE CEREAL? Monster Muesli or Granola Clusters (or sometimes both mixed together! Tee hee!)
DO YOU UNTIE YOUR SHOELACES WHEN YOU TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES? Eeek! I don’t usually… But I just got some cute little lace up boots that have zips at the back! So I can slip em off easily, without having to untie my shoelaces. How nifty is that!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVE ICE CREAM? I am obsessed with coconut ice cream – have a spoonful, close your eyes and it’s like you’re on a tropical island!
LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED? Letters to Juliet. I liked it! Amanda Seyfried is sweet, plus it made me want to go back to Italy!
WHAT IS THE FARTHEST YOU HAVE BEEN FROM HOME? Last year I went to a little cabin in the jungle in Mexico. Not sure if it’s technically the furthest I’ve been, but it certainly seemed oh so far from home! I was joined by some very noisy howler monkeys too…
DO YOU HAVE A SECRET TALENT? Hmmm… I can play the piccolo, it’s a pretty unpopular instrument! Plus… I can put my leg behind my head. I can’t believe I admitted that! I won’t try that one at GP HQ…

Cupcakes, cookies and cameras, oh my!

June 7th, 2010 by Nat | 5 Comments | Filed in Fashion, Stuff

Hey there Girl Powerettes!

It may be cold and rainy outside, but inside GP HQ it couldn’t be warmer!

That’s because we’ve just finished shooting our Sleepover Party shoot, and we had so much fun!  We had a sugar overload with delish cupcakes thanks to the awesome peeps over at My little Cupcake. We also got to munch on uber yummy cookies from Cookie Couture in Sydney, had a blast playing Twister DVD,  Jenga, and rocking out  to Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga!

But the photo shoot awesomeness would not have been complete without our fantastic team of models; Scarlett, Tia, Elizabeth and Indie! These gorgeous gals helped make the day an absolute blast!

A shout out also goes to our fantastic photographer Frankie, and make up artist Georgia – you guys rock!

Make sure you look out for our Sleepover Special Issue, which goes on sale next month!
