GP Chats to Emily Williams!

July 17th, 2012 by Whitney | 4 Comments | Filed in Celebrity, Music, Stuff

GP got chatty with super songstress, Emily Williams! Emily talks about her new album ‘Uncovered’,  being a female role model and even spills about an onstage slip up!

GP: What can we expect from your new album?

Emily: You can expect a lot of things! You can expect a lot of songs you can dance to and songs you can connect with. It’s all about emotions. The songs are also strengthening for girls and encouraging them to be strong and pick themselves up again when things get tough. Go for what you love!

GP: How would you describe your sound?

Emily: I would describe my sound as a mix of pop and soul. I love to dance a lot so I make sure some of my songs have a good rhythm to dance to. I also like to play songs in the morning because it makes me feel happy to start the day by dancing. But I know that there’s not always going to be happy times, so I make sure there is a bit of contrast in my songs as well.

GP: Who influences you the most when it comes to music?

Emily: Oh gosh, there are so many! Where do I start? I love all different artists. I love listening to The Beach Boys and I love Adele at the moment, too. She’s absolutely incredible. Definitely Rihanna, I love Rihanna’s swagger. I love Mariah’s older music because I grew up listening to it. But I really like Madonna, I’ve got to say I love Madonna.

GP: How does it feel to be performing solo again, after the Young Divas?

Emily: It gets kind of lonely because I miss the girls. But I started off like this when I was about five years old on stage, so it’s not new to me. I do miss the girls sometimes, but in the end, if this is what you want to do then you’ve got to work for it.

GP: Have you had any embarrassing moments on stage?

Emily: I think I might have when I was touring with Young Divas. We were onstage together and one of my buttons on my white shirt popped off and eventually all the buttons went ‘pop, pop, pop’ as they fell off! I was shocked and all I remember is seeing Paulini looking very shocked too!

GP: How important is it to be an important role model for young girls?

Emily: Well, to be honest, my daughter is nine. So I try to be careful with what I show and things i say. Because obviously when your daughter’s watching you, she’s going to follow every single thing you do. I want to tell girls to be yourself. Don’t follow the crowd and never let words get you down. Don’t gossip and never talk badly about other people because it can stir up a lot of trouble. Make sure you take care of yourself and be honest with yourself. Go for your goals, don’t be afraid to show who you are even if you are different.

GP: What advice do you have for Girl Power readers trying to achieve their dreams?

Emily: It doesn’t matter what it is, work hard for it. Always strive and never give up! Once you give up, it’s going to fall back down too. You’ve just got to keep pressing for it!

Emily’s album, ‘Uncovered’ is out now!

Win a Place at the Highest Photography Class in Sydney!

July 6th, 2012 by Anthea | 1 Comment | Filed in Competition

Happy Friday! Today we’ve got a fab competition for all those aspiring photographers out there! You can win a place at the highest photography class in Sydney – yippee!!!

Have you ever seen the firey layers of reds and warm tones of oranges blanket the Sydney skies as the sun rises and sets at the start and end of each day? The best place to see all of these amazing colours in the sky is at the Observation Deck and the SKYWALK at The Sydney Tower Eye. It’s the first point in Sydney where you can see the transition of night turn to day (and vice versa) from start to finish.

To celebrate our city’s sheer beauty, The Sydney Tower Eye is giving two lucky readers the chance to win a place at the highest photography class and learn how to capture a sensational sunset. The class will be hosted by top landscape photographer, Kris Baum. You will learn how to capture the richness of the skyline in just one shot and be given personal hints and tips from Kris himself.

What’s more, Sydney Tower Eye will be rewarding the person behind the best photograph taken at the class with a Canon PowerShot-SX40-HS so you can continue to capture those special moments in time.

For your chance to win a place at the photography class, email us at girlpower@nextmedia.com.au and tell us why you love watching the sun setting over Sydney in 25 words or less! You MUST include your full name and contact number for your entry to be valid. If they aren’t included, we cannot count your entry.

Before entering, please note:

  • The masterclass will take place on Wednesday, August 22nd from 5-6pm at Sydney Tower Eye. You must be able to make it to Sydney Tower Eye on that date to enter.
  • You must bring along your own camera and submit details of your camera model before attending the masterclass.
  • This competition closes Tuesday 31st of July.
  • Winners will be notified on the week commencing August 6th.

~ Good Luck! ~

Be on the Red Carpet Ratings panel!

July 5th, 2012 by Anthea | 30 Comments | Filed in Fashion, Stuff, The Magazine

We get lots of girl powerettes who want to be on the Red Carpet Ratings panel! It’s a super fun job, but lots of your lovely entries can’t be used because they are missing something. Sob! Here’s some top tips for getting picked!

1. Write a cool email to girlpower@nextmedia.com.au with the subject Red Carpet Ratings. Tell us why YOU would be perfect for the panel! Comments on this post CANNOT be accepted as they won’t have a photo or details. Email please!

2. Include your name AND age in the email.

3. We can’t pick you if there isn’t a big photo attached to the email. That means it has to be bright and clear, with a big file size (1 mb or more is great!) and no effects or drawings added on the top (even though they are very cute!) Make sure it isn’t grainy – photos taken on a web cam often won’t work!

4. Once picked, make sure you reply to our email ASAP! Otherwise they won’t be ready in time to be printed in the mag!

We hope these top tips help YOU be on our next fashion panel!
