July 14th, 2010 by Anthea | 3 Comments | Filed in Contribute, The Magazine

Hi Girls!

One of the things that makes Girl Power great is having your super smiling faces in the mag! We absolutely, positively LOVE to hear from readers, so you can email us any time with your stories, ideas, feedback and photos! Don’t be shy!

Our email is girlpower@next.com.au or you can just click the cute ‘Contact Us’ button on the top right hand side of the blog.

We also have a snail mail address! It is: Girl Power, PO Box 5555, St. Leonards, NSW, 1590

Try to put a subject next to ‘Girl Power’ like “I’m in the Mag”, “Celebrity Advice” etc.

Here’s some other ways YOU can appear in the mag…

  • Red Carpet Ratings – if you want to be on our fashion panel, email us with ‘red carpet ratings’ in the subject line. Include your name, age and a BIG pic of yourself.
  • I’m in the Mag – tell us all about yourself – your fave hobbies, animals, celebs or books! Email us with your letter and a big pic of yourself PLUS don’t forget to include your postal address so we can send out your prize if you win!  You can also pop a letter in the post, just write ‘I’m in the Mag’ on the envelope. Please note that we can’t use photos that have been printed out on paper.
  • If you have two celebs you want us to link in six steps, email us with your name and age and put ‘Six Degrees of Separation’ in the subject line.
  • If you want to appear on our Pen Pal page, send us an email with the subject ‘Pen Pals’ and include your full name, age and postal address plus a short letter about yourself.
  • Something troubling you? Do you want a star to provide you with a solution? Email in your celebrity advice questions with the subject ‘Celebrity Advice’. You can also send us a letter and put ‘Celebrity Advice’ on the envelope.
  • Have you held a cake stall for charity, helped out a friend or want to dob in a super sweet (and humble!) friend? Email us with your stories and photos with the subject ‘I heart Helping’ or you can send a letter to our address and put ‘I heart helping’ on the envelope.
  • We LOVE animals! Email or mail us your pet stories, photos and questions! Put ‘Pet Chat’ on the envelope or in the subject line of the email.
  • Have you met a star, gone on an awesome school excursion or do you live in a far-flung corner of the world? Email us with your stories and photos and put ‘Real Reads’ in the subject line.
  • Are you uber-arty? Mail in your artworks and collages and put ‘The Scrapbook’ on the envelope. It’s best if they are about A4 size!

We also love to hear about your fave…

  • Websites – email us with the subject ‘Surfing the Net’
  • Books – tell us about your fave book in about 50 words and you could score a prize too! Just email us with ‘reader rave’ in the title.

We can’t wait to hear from you!

Be a good samaritan!

June 23rd, 2010 by Nat | No Comments | Filed in Contribute, Stuff, The Magazine

Hey Girl Powerettes!

Yesterday I experienced a random act of kindness and  that’s why I feel  inspired to write an A-B-C of good deeds to spread the good karma!

Like heaps of GP readers, I’d do anything for my pet pooch Mooky. So when she leapt into a muddy lake, I was terrified!  That’s why a big shout out goes to the very brave man who dived in yesterday to rescue her.

Good samaritans like this superhero deserve to thanked! Good deeds, whether big or small make the world go round. From saving the planet to giving to charity, kind acts can come in any shape or form. Have a think about what you can do to make the world a better place.  Maybe you can pick one good deed for each letter of the alphabet. Keep reading GIRL POWER and you’ll find lot of awesome tips on our I Heart Helping page. In the meantime, I’ll get you started on good deeds from A-Z…

A – Arrange for you and all your friends to get rid of all your old clothes and donate them to your fave charity!  Twilight star Kellan Lutz was recently spotted donating over 50 pairs of jeans to the Haiti Relief fund – how generous!

B – Be a darling and offer to help Mum and Dad out with dinner or washing up afterwards! They’ll be so grateful!

C – Crack a joke and brighten up your friend with the long face!  Laughter is the best medicine after all! If all else fails, hire a funny DVD like She’s The Man – Amanda Bynes is hilarious!

Wanna be in the mag? Give us your SUPER sleepover tips!

May 21st, 2010 by Anthea | 14 Comments | Filed in Contribute, The Magazine

Hey girls,

Brrr! It’s been a bit  chilly lately at GP HQ! But one of the best things about this wintery weather is it’s a perfect excuse to organise a night in with your besties for a super sleepover! Fab food, flicks and all your gal pals… sounds kinda perfect!

Some of my top tips for a extra special sleepover are…

1. Serve a few healthy snacks as well as some sweet ones. If you all get on a massive sugar high, you’ll crash before the sleepover has barely started!

2. Pick some classic flicks like the gorgeously girly Roman Holiday or the always wonderful Wizard of Oz. Not only are they fab films, your gal pals are less likely to have seen them recently.

3. Get your besties to bring a CD or make a playlist so you get a cool mix of music. Have a dance early on though – you don’t want to wake up the neighbourhood (or your parents!) by blasting the music at midnight. Plus, then you’ll want to wind down and watch some fab flicks.

So girls… care to share YOUR top sleepover tips? Hit the contact us button at the top of our site, or email us at girlpower@next.com.au. Attach a big photo of yourself too and we might feature your smiling self in the mag!

What are you waiting for? We can’t wait to hear from you!

We’re Super Smiley!

April 1st, 2010 by Anthea | 1 Comment | Filed in Contribute, The Magazine

Hey there!

It’s a beautiful day today in Girl Power HQ, the sun is shining and we’re smiling! In fact, it would totally be a crime not to have a smile on our dial today! Why you ask? Well…

  1. It’s April Fools’ Day! A day where you are permitted to play pranks. We hope you haven’t been too bamboozled!
  2. We’re still laughing at all the jokes in the smile issue of Girl Power, which is on sale now. There is a joke on every page plus a prank guide and a super story on boosting your mood. Oh and (s)Miley is on the cover! Did you know smiling so much is how Miley got her name? Her nickname was ‘Smiley’ and it was shortened to Miley!
  3. Easter is coming up, so we can hang out with our fam and friends.
  4. All you girl powerettes are just oh so lovely!
  5. It’s Smile Day! Um. That’s kinda awesome.

Smile Day raises money for The Humour Foundation. This cool charity puts Clown Doctors in hospitals across the country to brighten up sick kids’ days. They make balloon animals, tell jokes and pull out some giggle-inducing gags. Laughter sure can be the best medicine sometimes.

Here at Girl Power, we really heart helping. Whether it is letting people know about your fave charity, or even just writing a nice note to your bestie to let them know how much they mean to you. There are SO many ways to help out and make others happy. Oh, and here’s a tip, help out and you’ll feel pretty smiley too!

We’d LOVE to hear your stories about when you’ve helped out (or you can dob in an ultra charitable friend!). Send an email and a pic of your smiling self to girlpower@next.com.au with the subject ‘I heart helping’.

Have a lovely long weekend!

Lotsa love,

Anthea xx

p.s. We still wanna hear about your best birthday ever, plus have an awesome camp rock giveaway going on!

New Year’s Resolutions

December 14th, 2009 by Nat | 1 Comment | Filed in Contribute, Stuff, Wisdom

So 2010 is approaching, which is really exciting! A new year often means a fresh start and a chance to do all those things you’ve been meaning to try but never get around to. For me this includes trying out all those awesome DIY projects that I get inspired to do over the year. I’d also like to shop less and become a better cook!

What do you guys resolve to do more of this year? Miley’s 2009 resolution was to: ” Exercise more and eat healthier”

Meanwhile, Selena Gomez says hers was to “be a better friend. I want to make sure my friends like Demi [Lovato] and Jennifer [Stone] know how much I appreciate them. It’s important to always say thank you to your BFF.”

Whether its to learn a whole new skill, like rockclimbing or photography, or vowing to do one good deed every day, a new year’s resolution can very rewarding ! Sticking to your resolution, is easier said than done, so I’d like to know Powerettes, will you be making a resolution this year and if so, what will it be?

nat xx
