Bored Games

July 13th, 2010 by Anthea | 3 Comments | Filed in The Magazine

Hola!

How are your holidays going girls? Having lots of parties with your pals? When you’re stuck indoors, sometimes a good game will raise the fun factor through the roof!

You could try board games like…

  • Cranium - it tests your whole brain (hence the name!) with categories like word games, sculpture, charades and trivia.
  • Taboo - in taboo you have to try to describe a word without mentioning the “taboo” words on the card. For example… Miley Cyrus without saying Singer, Hannah Montana, TV, Disney and Nashville.
  • Pictionary - use your inner-artist to draw up a storm. It’s a cool and creative guessing game.

If you have a deck of cards, you could try some classics like…

  • Memory – play alone or with friends. Match red aces, black kings, red 2s etc. etc. To make it more tricky – remove a card or two from the deck so there are a few cards without a matching pair.
  • Pig - Put one less spoon than the amount of players in the centre of a circle. Deal out four cards to each player – you need at least three players. The aim is to get four cards of the same suit – all 4s, all queens, all aces etc. To do this, you put all the remaining cards in a stock pile. The dealer picks up a card from the pile and discards one to their left. Everyone picks up the card from their right, and discards one to their left. When you run out of cards in the pile, use the discarded pile as the stock pile. When you have four of the same suit, stick your tongue out. If you see someone with their tongue out, stick it out too! The last person with their tongue out loses the round and gets a P. If you lose again you get an I and if you lose again you get a G. Once you’ve spelt out pig, you’re eliminated! Oink!

Other fun games are…

  • The dictionary game. The leader of the round finds a wacky word from the dictionary and writes down its definition on a piece of paper. Everyone else has to write down a fun definition of the word too and hands it to the leader. She reads out all the definitions including the correct one and then everyone votes on which they think is the right one. If you get it correct you get 1 point. If someone picks your made up definition you get 2 points. If no one picks the correct definition the leader gets 2 points. Each take it in turns being the leader. Once you’ve all been the leader twice, the girl with the highest point score wins! Yippee!
  • The chocolate game – Get two dice, a block of chocolate, dress-up clothes and a knife and fork. Sit in a circle and take it in turns rolling the dice. If you roll a double, put on the dress-ups and eat the choc with the knife and fork, one cube at a time, while the others keep rolling. Don’t stop eating until the next double is rolled! Play until the block has run out!

For more fun games check out the latest issue of Girl Power! It’s filled with great games for every occasion and fun-tastic boredom busters! What are you waiting for? Get gaming girls!

Be a good samaritan!

June 23rd, 2010 by Nat | No Comments | Filed in Contribute, Stuff, The Magazine

Hey Girl Powerettes!

Yesterday I experienced a random act of kindness and  that’s why I feel  inspired to write an A-B-C of good deeds to spread the good karma!

Like heaps of GP readers, I’d do anything for my pet pooch Mooky. So when she leapt into a muddy lake, I was terrified!  That’s why a big shout out goes to the very brave man who dived in yesterday to rescue her.

Good samaritans like this superhero deserve to thanked! Good deeds, whether big or small make the world go round. From saving the planet to giving to charity, kind acts can come in any shape or form. Have a think about what you can do to make the world a better place.  Maybe you can pick one good deed for each letter of the alphabet. Keep reading GIRL POWER and you’ll find lot of awesome tips on our I Heart Helping page. In the meantime, I’ll get you started on good deeds from A-Z…

A – Arrange for you and all your friends to get rid of all your old clothes and donate them to your fave charity!  Twilight star Kellan Lutz was recently spotted donating over 50 pairs of jeans to the Haiti Relief fund – how generous!

B – Be a darling and offer to help Mum and Dad out with dinner or washing up afterwards! They’ll be so grateful!

C – Crack a joke and brighten up your friend with the long face!  Laughter is the best medicine after all! If all else fails, hire a funny DVD like She’s The Man – Amanda Bynes is hilarious!

Got more helpful hints on how to be a do-gooder? Email us at girlpower@next.com.au and don’t forget to attach a pic!

Getting to Know You… Part 3

June 11th, 2010 by Anthea | 12 Comments | Filed in The Magazine

It’s time to meet Anthea, GP’s fabulous Features Writer!

NAME: Anthea
BIRTHDAY: 17th of August
WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE? Sort of… My parents saw an ad for the clothing designer Anthea Crawford in a magazine and thought it sounded sweet!
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED? Last weekend! I got a message from one of my besties, Georgie, who lives in London. It was so nice to hear from her, so I was smiley and teary at the same time!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVE THING TO EAT FOR LUNCH? I’m loving curried lentil soup with dark rye bread! Oh and I top off every lunch with a Granny Smith apple – I’m the GP apple queen!
DO YOU STILL HAVE YOUR TONSILS? La la la (that’s me singing!). I sure do!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVE CEREAL? Monster Muesli or Granola Clusters (or sometimes both mixed together! Tee hee!)
DO YOU UNTIE YOUR SHOELACES WHEN YOU TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES? Eeek! I don’t usually… But I just got some cute little lace up boots that have zips at the back! So I can slip em off easily, without having to untie my shoelaces. How nifty is that!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVE ICE CREAM? I am obsessed with coconut ice cream – have a spoonful, close your eyes and it’s like you’re on a tropical island!
LAST MOVIE YOU WATCHED? Letters to Juliet. I liked it! Amanda Seyfried is sweet, plus it made me want to go back to Italy!
WHAT IS THE FARTHEST YOU HAVE BEEN FROM HOME? Last year I went to a little cabin in the jungle in Mexico. Not sure if it’s technically the furthest I’ve been, but it certainly seemed oh so far from home! I was joined by some very noisy howler monkeys too…
DO YOU HAVE A SECRET TALENT? Hmmm… I can play the piccolo, it’s a pretty unpopular instrument! Plus… I can put my leg behind my head. I can’t believe I admitted that! I won’t try that one at GP HQ…
