Find Your Inner Ugly Betty!

January 11th, 2010 by Bec | 3 Comments | Filed in Beauty, Wisdom

Hey Girl Powerettes,

One of the best things about holidays is all that spare time! You know, the freedom to do whatever you like, whenever you like. So I’m happy to say that the last few weeks have been spent doing exactly that- reading, swimming and watching one of my favourite TV series on DVD; Ugly Betty!

In case you haven’t watched it, (which you really should do, straight away), Ugly Betty is all about smart and kind-hearted Betty Suarez, who lands a job at fashion magazine, Mode. Only problem is that Betty has some seriously bad dress sense, and her nasty co-workers are determined to bring Betty down. However, through hard work and determination Betty manages to keep her job and even get a promotion! How does she do it though?

Here are my top 3 lessons to learn from the wonderful Betty SuarezZ!

1. Put On Your Poker Face

Betty’s finds herself in sticky situations all the time! When she’s given her first writing assignment for Mode, Betty panics and nearly cracks. But instead of letting her fear show, Betty smiles and looks confident. Betty’s throws herself into her assignment and ends up doing a fantastic job. So remember, when even when you’re not feeling 100% confident, fake it til you make it!

2. Just Do It!

It could be talking to your crush, or the teacher asking you a question in class you don’t know but all of a sudden your tummy’s full of butterflies and your hands are clammy and cold. You’re nervous and can’t seem to focus! Just remember that even when Betty’s scared and nervous (like on her first horrible day at Mode) she asks heaps of questions and takes on challenging tasks. Just remember, confidence is key!

3. The Beauty in Ugly

Betty lives in a world obsessed with looks. Both at Mode and for Betty’s sister Hilda and nephew Justin, beauty and fashion is everything. But Betty’s not interested; she’d rather be a good person and get ahead in her career than worry about looking perfect. Eventually, Betty’s sense of humour and personality wins over her co-workers and the fashion world as a whole. So remember, beauty really is on the inside!

What about you, do you have any TV role models? What great lessons have you learnt from your fave TV shows?

New Year’s Resolutions

December 14th, 2009 by Nat | 7 Comments | Filed in Contribute, Stuff, Wisdom

So 2010 is approaching, which is really exciting! A new year often means a fresh start and a chance to do all those things you’ve been meaning to try but never get around to. For me this includes trying out all those awesome DIY projects that I get inspired to do over the year. I’d also like to shop less and become a better cook!

What do you guys resolve to do more of this year? Miley’s 2009 resolution was to: ” Exercise more and eat healthier”

Meanwhile, Selena Gomez says hers was to “be a better friend. I want to make sure my friends like Demi [Lovato] and Jennifer [Stone] know how much I appreciate them. It’s important to always say thank you to your BFF.”

Whether its to learn a whole new skill, like rockclimbing or photography, or vowing to do one good deed every day, a new year’s resolution can very rewarding ! Sticking to your resolution, is easier said than done, so I’d like to know Powerettes, will you be making a resolution this year and if so, what will it be?

Christmas Present Ideas

December 4th, 2009 by Girl Power Magazine | 5 Comments | Filed in Stuff, Wisdom, websites

Has everyone picked out what they’re getting their loved ones for Christmas yet? I’ve got an idea for Mum (perfume), and my sister (jewellery) but my Dad? Well… he’s always a tough one!

Every year I get my dad the same thing – a puzzle! He LOVES puzzles, but I want to get him something different this year. He’s a very hard man to get presents for. Have you guys got any suggestions?

This year I’m doing something really generous! I’m buying all my friends a gift donation from Oxfam Unwrapped and the World Vision Smiles Catalogue. Every gift I buy will go towards helping those in need and it can be as little as $5 for new colouring pencils! The donation will be sent on behalf of my friends and I’m sure they’ll love getting a card explaining how their gift is helping others.

So remember to give generously this Christmas!
