Terrific Tink!

August 2nd, 2010 by Anthea | No Comments | Filed in Movies

Here at GP HQ, we loooooove fairies! One of our all time faves is the fabulous Tinker Bell. We’re uber-excited because she’s starring in her very own film, Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue!

In this flick, we meet Tink in the days before Wendy and the Lost Boys. She meets a girl called Lizzy and they become fast friends. Unfortunately Lizzy has a greedy father who wants to take Tink away to a museum! Eeeek! In the scuffle to steal her, Tink’s friend Iridessa gets taken instead. Tink sets off on an epic journey to rescue her friend and save fairy kind!

Check out the trailer here!

It hits cinemas on Thursday, August 5. Yay! Also you can witness the magical moment when Tinker Bell first meets a human, and it’s not who you might think, when Tinker Bell – The Great Fairy Rescue flies onto Disney Blu-Ray and DVD September 15!

We can’t wait for this fab fairy flick! There’s also loads more info on Tink and a guide to all things fairy in this month’s Girl Power. Be sure to check it out!

Movie Magic

July 26th, 2010 by Amy | 7 Comments | Filed in Stuff

Happy Monday Girl Powerettes!
Hope you all had fabulous weekends!

Working for the world’s coolest magazine (ahem, that would be GIRL POWER!) has many maaaany perks. We get to meet celebrities, we get to have a heap of fun at photo shoots and we even get to test out new toys and games and sometimes even chocolate or cupcakes. Yummy!

But one of the bestest parts of our job is getting to see some super cool movies before everyone else does! Yippee! Not that we’re bragging or anything… OK we totally are… But we watch TONS of movies each month so that we can tell you, our lovely GP readers, what they’re all about and which ones you just can’t miss!

Lately we’ve been lucky enough to watch some really amazing movies that are coming soon to a cinema near you…

Step Up 3D

This groovy dance movie is in 3D so there are legs and arms flying right at you during every scene! If you’re a fan of dance flicks, you’ll really love this one. Plus, it stars Aussie actress Sharni Vinson!
See it….from August 5!

Despicable Me

This movie is really, really, really funny. Just ask Girl Power’s Fashion Coordinator Natali – she giggled all the way through our screening! Despicable Me is a 3D animated movie about an evil villain who wants to steal the moon. His little yellow minions are so cute!
See it….from September 9!

Diary Of A Wimpy Kid

Get ready to giggle ’cause Diary Of A Wimpy Kid had us rolling in the aisles with tears streaming down our faces! It’s based on the famous book series, and it’s really entertaining.
See it….from September 23!

Wanted… 10 Amazing Girls!

July 15th, 2010 by Anthea | 2 Comments | Filed in Competition

Superstar snowboarder Torah Bright and Gwen Tennyson from Ben 10 are on the search for 10 amazing ambassadors to empower and inspire other girls! Yippee!!

‘The Search for Gwen’s 10′ is taking place now on gwen10.com Log on and complete a quiz that will test whether you possess positive traits like being active, confident, having good self-esteem and being loyal. If you are chosen as part of Gwen’s 10, you will represent Gwen and provide advice to girls about issues like bullying and self-esteem. Awww, so sweet!

You’ll also score some sweet prizes like…

  • A one year scholarship to ACT SING DANCE Club House – Australia’s largest performing arts academy
  • A Gwen 10 Wardrobe
  • A VIP experience at the live action show Ben 10 Live where you will have the chance to meet Gwen!

You’ll have to impress the stellar judging panel which is made up of: Olympic Gold Medallist Torah Bright, Zoe Eaton from the Cartoon Network and Lee Morgan from Club Houze performing arts academy.

We got in touch with Torah to ask her about this exciting comp…

1. What type of girls do you hope to find in the search for Gwen’s 10?

I have always stood up for what I believe in, and hopefully through the search we’ll find some Australian girls who are not scared to stand up for themselves and their friends.

2. Why did you decide to sign up as an ambassador?

It is great to see that Cartoon Network in Australia is using their voice to help young Australian girls. The issues that the campaign is hoping to address are very close to my heart, and I feel that through this campaign, I will be able to spread these strong messages to Australian girls and help to make a difference.

3. What does your role involve exactly?

Together with Gwen, I will share the role as face of the campaign on Cartoon Network, and will be involved in spreading the campaign message through interstitials on Cartoon Network and will help the panel to judge the final 10 girls.

4. Gwen from Ben 10 is your ‘co-host’- are you a fan of cartoons or did you watch them as a kid?

Of course. Doesn’t everybody? I used to watch a few shows here and there when I could. We didn’t have cool shows like Ben 10 in our day though, let me tell you!

5. Do you get nervous in front of the camera, or are you a natural?

I always get a little nervous with exciting new things, but I don’t let that stop me from having fun and doing the best I can. I had a lot of fun filming for Cartoon Network- costume changes, talking about things I believe in, what’s not to love?!

6. What advice would you give to girls who want to follow in the footsteps of Gwen Tennyson or yourself?

I’ve always followed my own path and stood up for what I believe in, even from a young age, and I would encourage young girls to do the same, and believe in themselves more.

What a wow-worthy message! So girls… do you have what it takes to be an ambassador for other girls? Log on to gwen10.com today!

Bored Games

July 13th, 2010 by Anthea | 3 Comments | Filed in The Magazine

Hola!

How are your holidays going girls? Having lots of parties with your pals? When you’re stuck indoors, sometimes a good game will raise the fun factor through the roof!

You could try board games like…

  • Cranium - it tests your whole brain (hence the name!) with categories like word games, sculpture, charades and trivia.
  • Taboo - in taboo you have to try to describe a word without mentioning the “taboo” words on the card. For example… Miley Cyrus without saying Singer, Hannah Montana, TV, Disney and Nashville.
  • Pictionary - use your inner-artist to draw up a storm. It’s a cool and creative guessing game.

If you have a deck of cards, you could try some classics like…

  • Memory – play alone or with friends. Match red aces, black kings, red 2s etc. etc. To make it more tricky – remove a card or two from the deck so there are a few cards without a matching pair.
  • Pig - Put one less spoon than the amount of players in the centre of a circle. Deal out four cards to each player – you need at least three players. The aim is to get four cards of the same suit – all 4s, all queens, all aces etc. To do this, you put all the remaining cards in a stock pile. The dealer picks up a card from the pile and discards one to their left. Everyone picks up the card from their right, and discards one to their left. When you run out of cards in the pile, use the discarded pile as the stock pile. When you have four of the same suit, stick your tongue out. If you see someone with their tongue out, stick it out too! The last person with their tongue out loses the round and gets a P. If you lose again you get an I and if you lose again you get a G. Once you’ve spelt out pig, you’re eliminated! Oink!

Other fun games are…

  • The dictionary game. The leader of the round finds a wacky word from the dictionary and writes down its definition on a piece of paper. Everyone else has to write down a fun definition of the word too and hands it to the leader. She reads out all the definitions including the correct one and then everyone votes on which they think is the right one. If you get it correct you get 1 point. If someone picks your made up definition you get 2 points. If no one picks the correct definition the leader gets 2 points. Each take it in turns being the leader. Once you’ve all been the leader twice, the girl with the highest point score wins! Yippee!
  • The chocolate game – Get two dice, a block of chocolate, dress-up clothes and a knife and fork. Sit in a circle and take it in turns rolling the dice. If you roll a double, put on the dress-ups and eat the choc with the knife and fork, one cube at a time, while the others keep rolling. Don’t stop eating until the next double is rolled! Play until the block has run out!

For more fun games check out the latest issue of Girl Power! It’s filled with great games for every occasion and fun-tastic boredom busters! What are you waiting for? Get gaming girls!

Boredom Busters

Hey Gals
Hope you’re all well and warm, wherever you may be!

Now we don’t know about you, but the chilly weather has us hiding inside, under our doonas these days, and that can be B-O-R-I-N-G! Here are a few boredom-busting activity ideas to keep you busy…

1. MAKE A TASTY TREAT
Bake some biscuits, make some muffins, or if you’re really talented you can cook dinner for your family! Yum! The latest issue of Girl Power has so many amazing recipes – you can make Berry Crumble, Beetroot Dip or yummy Meringues!

2. READ A BOOK OR TWO
Reading is heaps of fun! Find an old favourite, snuggle up on the couch and get to it. Or visit your local library and borrow a new book to devour! Here are some of our recommendations:

The Obernewtyn Chronicles by Isobelle Carmody
This is an amazing fantasy series about an orphan named Elspeth who has special powers – she can talk to animals and read people’s minds! Because of her powers, Elspeth is sent to a scary hospital called Obernewtyn…

Hating Alison Ashley by Robyn Klein
This book is laugh-out-loud funny. It’s the tale of Erica Yurken who dreams of becoming a famous actress and leaving behind her crazy family and horrible school. What will happen when Erica meets the pretty, perfect new girl Alison Ashley?

The Baby-Sitters Club series by Ann M. Martin
These books were big in the ’80s and now they’re being re-released! The books follow a group of besties who start a baby-sitting club.

3. HAVE A MOVIE MARATHON
Invite your besties over, make some microwave popcorn and pop in a DVD. Movie marathons are really fun! We like theming our marathons… like watching movies that are only about Princesses: The Princess and The Frog, The Princess Diaries and Enchanted. There are lots of movie marathon ideas in the latest issue of Girl Power!

What do you get up to when you’re stuck at home? Comment below, or email your activity ideas to girlpower@next.com.au
