GP Chats to Ricki-Lee!

December 16th, 2011 by Amy | 1 Comment | Filed in Music

This week, we caught up with Ricki-Lee Coulter to find out how she’s helping others this Chrissie! A singer and a sweetie – Ricki-Lee is all kinds of awesome!!! Read on to find out where Ricki-Lee and other music stars are performing next week…

On Monday you’ll be taking part in the Optus Celebrity Carols for charity. What will you be doing?

Myself, Shannon Noll and Johnny Ruffo will be taking to the streets in different states. So I’ll be doing Sydney at Pitt Street Mall, Shannon Noll will be doing Brisbane and Johnny Ruffo will be doing Melbourne. We’ll each be busking in the street which is fun!

The great thing about it is it’s all about raising money for charity, so we’ll be taking donations and the money will go toward our selected charity. Mine is The Smith Family and Optus will match dollar for dollar every donation made, so hopefully we can make a great amount of money. For my charity The Smith Family it’s really important because it’s all about helping disadvantaged children and educating those kids and I guess at Christmas time they don’t always get to wake up with a present under the tree. So if we can help get them a present under the tree it’s worth it in my eyes.

So you’ve supported the Smith Family before?

Yeah I’ve done some work with them before and it really is amazing to see what they do. They really do focus on educating these children who are disadvantaged and you know education is so important, they’ve seen so many success stories come out of the Smith Family and become successful in their own right and it really is an incredible charity.

Do you have a favourite Christmas carol?

I’m such a big Mariah Carey Christmas album fan, like every girl it gets played to death at Christmas! So I’m going to be doing ‘All I want for Christmas is You’ which is like my favourite Christmas song and then I’m going to be doing my other favourite which is the ballad ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’, as well as a few of my own songs. I’ve also got a bit of a busking band going on which will be fun and I’m looking forward to it.

So you’ve never busked before?

No, so I’m kind of nervous and scared! I hope people stop and donate some money to charity.

I’m sure the hat will fill up very quickly. It might have to be a tub!

I hope so! Maybe a suitcase!

So is performing in the street scarier than on stage?

It’s going to be so different because you’re out in the open and people are just walking past. Usually when you’re doing a show, a gig or on tour people have come specifically to see you, but when you’re just busking in the street it’s just people walking past and if they’re interested they will stop and if they’re not then they’ll keep walking. Hopefully more people stop and watch than keep walking.

So how do you get ready for your performances?

I warm up my voice so I don’t do any damage and other than that I don’t have any other rituals. I just drink lots of water and if I’m performing with dancers I’ll do a bit of a run-through with my choreographer and my dancers so we’re in the zone. I’ll check over the songs and make sure I’m doing them in the right order. I’m quite relaxed! I’ve heard of people who wont talk for 8 hours and only drink room temperature water and won’t eat, people can get very over the top but I’m easygoing.

So you’re not a diva then!?

No, no!

Do you have any nice Christmas traditions?

I just like spending it with my family. I’m starting a tradition this year though. I do Carols by Candlelight every year on Christmas Eve in Melbourne and because I’m from Queensland, waking up in Melbourne on Christmas morning in a hotel room with no Christmas tree, it’s kind of like ‘oh’… So I’ll go over to my friends house and cook a big Christmas brunch so I’ll feel at home and I get to put some presents under their Christmas tree. Then I’ll fly up to Queensland to see my family!

Ricki-Lee Coulter, Johnny Ruffo and Shannon Noll will all be busking next week as part of the Optus Celebrity Carols.

Ricki-Lee will be busking on Monday December 19 at 11am in Pitt Street Mall, Sydney for The Smith Family.

Johnny Ruffo will be busking on Tuesday December 20 at 11 am at the State Library of Victoria Forecourt, Swanston Street, Melbourne for World Vision.

Shannon Noll will be busking on Wednesday December 21 at 11am at Queen Street Mall, Brisbane for Kids Helpline.

Get a Mini-Manicure Tomorrow and Set a World Record!

September 26th, 2011 by Anthea | 11 Comments | Filed in Beauty, The Magazine

Hey girls!

We just got word about a really cool event tomorrow, Tuesday September 27 at Martin Place in Sydney’s CBD! Priceline and Sally Hansen are aiming to set a new Guinness World Record for the most nails filed and varnished in 8 hours! They’ve got to beat the current world record which is 1897 mini-manictures – wowzers!

You can get a free mini-manicure from 8am to 4pm – that’s a file, a base coat, two coats of varnish AND a top coat! Too cool! Boys are welcome too – they’ll get a file and a buff to shine!

Our fave bit is that you can make a donation to The Priceline Sisterhood – with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Look Good… Feel Better. This awesome charity helps women who have gone through cancer treatment. It gives them skin care, make-up, hats and wigs to make them feel special again.

If you’re not in Sydney – you won’t miss out! You can head into any Priceline or Priceline Pharmacy and get a mini-manicure in store! They won’t count towards the world record – but your donations will still help Look Good… Feel Better!

So head on down to Martin Place in Sydney tomorrow, or into your local Priceline store! We sure will :)

We’re Super Smiley!

April 1st, 2010 by Anthea | 2 Comments | Filed in Contribute, The Magazine

Hey there!

It’s a beautiful day today in Girl Power HQ, the sun is shining and we’re smiling! In fact, it would totally be a crime not to have a smile on our dial today! Why you ask? Well…

  1. It’s April Fools’ Day! A day where you are permitted to play pranks. We hope you haven’t been too bamboozled!
  2. We’re still laughing at all the jokes in the smile issue of Girl Power, which is on sale now. There is a joke on every page plus a prank guide and a super story on boosting your mood. Oh and (s)Miley is on the cover! Did you know smiling so much is how Miley got her name? Her nickname was ‘Smiley’ and it was shortened to Miley!
  3. Easter is coming up, so we can hang out with our fam and friends.
  4. All you girl powerettes are just oh so lovely!
  5. It’s Smile Day! Um. That’s kinda awesome.

Smile Day raises money for The Humour Foundation. This cool charity puts Clown Doctors in hospitals across the country to brighten up sick kids’ days. They make balloon animals, tell jokes and pull out some giggle-inducing gags. Laughter sure can be the best medicine sometimes.

Here at Girl Power, we really heart helping. Whether it is letting people know about your fave charity, or even just writing a nice note to your bestie to let them know how much they mean to you. There are SO many ways to help out and make others happy. Oh, and here’s a tip, help out and you’ll feel pretty smiley too!

We’d LOVE to hear your stories about when you’ve helped out (or you can dob in an ultra charitable friend!). Send an email and a pic of your smiling self to girlpower@next.com.au with the subject ‘I heart helping’.

Have a lovely long weekend!

Lotsa love,

Anthea xx

p.s. We still wanna hear about your best birthday ever, plus have an awesome camp rock giveaway going on!

HELP HAITI – Celebs Band Together

March 15th, 2010 by Mel | 17 Comments | Filed in Celebrity, Music

You’ve all probably heard this lovely charity song “WE ARE THE WORLD” directed by Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones. It was recorded in the same studio Michael Jackson did the original 25 years ago and helps raise money to those affected by the devastating disaster in Haiti. I can’t stop playing this song because I love hearing the unique blending of all the different sounds and voices each artist has in this song. It also reminds me that in such suffering times, everyone around the world unites to help out – even celebs. It features over 80 artists and performers. Here are the ones I spotted: Justin Bieber, Fergie, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion, Adam Levine(Maroon 5), Black Eyed Peas, Pink, Jamie Foxx, Usher, Nicole Scherzinger, Mark J. Blige, Carlos Santana, Jason Mraz, Jordin Sparks, Joel Madden and many MORE!

Can you spot the Jonas Brothers?
