Hi girls!
The uber-cute play, The Gruffalo’s Child begins this week! Based on the book of the same name, it’s about an adorable animal who goes on an adventure in the woods in search of the big bad mouse. It’s the sequel to The Gruffalo!
We got chatting with Chandel Brandimarti who plays the Gruffalo’s child to find out about what it takes to be an actor!
What’s it like playing an animal?
It’s definitely lots of fun. In the rehearsal process there was a lot of moving around like animals to try and get a feel for how a gruffalo might move. My character has a lot of human child traits as well. There’s a lot of freedom in bringing to life a character that lives only in your imagination.
Do you get to wear a cool costume?
The costumes are amazing! Mine is a giant furry jacket with matching furry pants, long gloves with claws and a furry hat with little horns and big ears. It’s very cute, although its also very hot!
Did you imagine yourself having this job when you were young?
Well, did I imagine myself running around on stage in a big furry suit? Not quite!! But I did always want to be a performer, yes.
Is it tricky to learn all those lines?
Not really. Once you start to get a feel for the character and get inside their head, the lines become almost second nature. . . . . Thank goodness.
What’s one thing you always keep in your dressing room?
Lots of water! . . . and bobby pins. No matter how much I try, I always seem to lose all my bobby pins.
What’s the strangest character you’ve ever played?
I’ve played a lot of interesting characters. I once played Mrs Claus who wanted to divorce Santa. In terms of strange though, I think this one is probably the most strange. A very cute, furry strange.
Can you spill a backstage secret from The Gruffalo’s Child?
Stickman (he’s the wooden toy the child carries around) can be a bit of a diva.
What are your top three tips for conquering stage fright?
- Breathe deeply
- Know your plot back to front
- Become your character completely, whether you are acting, singing or dancing. If you’re not you, you can’t be nervous!
